How Do You Keep a Police Car Connected to CAD, Video, and Critical Applications?

Police vehicles have become mobile workspaces.
Officers rely on connectivity for computer-aided dispatch (CAD), mobile data terminals (MDTs), records systems, mapping, video, license plate recognition, cloud applications, communications tools, and other resources that increasingly depend on an internet connection.
The challenge is that a patrol vehicle does not operate in one place. It moves between neighborhoods, highways, rural areas, parking structures, incident scenes, and locations where cellular coverage can change from one block to the next.

A Police Car Needs More Than a Hotspot
For years, putting internet in a patrol vehicle often meant installing a cellular modem or mobile router and connecting it to a carrier. That can work extremely well—until that particular network does not.
An officer may have a strong connection in one part of the jurisdiction and poor service several miles away. Coverage can also change because of terrain, network congestion, damaged infrastructure, severe weather, or simply because an incident takes responders somewhere they do not normally operate.
When the connection becomes unreliable, the applications running over it can become unreliable too. CAD may stop updating. An MDT can lose its connection. Video may take longer to upload. Mapping or cloud applications can become difficult to access.
The officer does not care which network is having a problem. The officer needs the application to work.
Why Does CAD Disconnect in a Patrol Vehicle?
Sometimes the issue is not CAD at all. It is the connection underneath it.
Mobile applications depend on the networks available to the vehicle. If a vehicle relies on a single cellular connection, its usable coverage is ultimately limited by that network.
That is why agencies looking for reliable CAD connectivity should look beyond the application itself and consider how the vehicle is getting to the internet.
Can a Police Vehicle Use More Than One Network?

Starlink can support approved mobility applications when it is paired with the appropriate hardware and service plan. For public safety agencies, however, the bigger question is usually how Starlink fits into the rest of the vehicle.
A police department may already have cellular routers, antennas, MDTs, cameras, CAD systems, and other equipment installed across dozens or hundreds of vehicles. Adding satellite should not mean starting over.
